1. Introduce yourself and what you do
I’m a freelance creative practitioner. I offer illustration, copywriting, research and I devise and lead community engagement workshops. I generally work with cultural and nature based organisations.
2. How and why did you start freelancing?
I started freelancing as a way to explore creative projects in museum settings, having previously worked in museum collections based roles. I get to work on varied creative projects within really fantastic interdisciplinary teams, which I love.
3. Where do you find your clients and new projects?
I approach organisations and start conversations. This sometimes leads onto freelance work. I also apply for commissions, and apply for funding for projects.
4. How do you know what to charge?
I ask other freelancers and sometimes my clients give me feedback around charging. I also cost in travel, childcare, materials etc.
5. What important pieces of advice would you give as a creative freelancer?
Be clear about the sort of work you really want to do, and be reflexive. This can change as time passes. I would also advise to network as much as you can. Never be afraid to start conversations. You never know where they might lead.
