How does a student society committee role help to develop professional skills?
Societies can make up a large proportion of a student’s experience at University. There are many different societies to choose from, with a wide range of interests that you can pursue and by joining one you get to meet like-minded people. Societies are run by students for students so they are usually free or you can join for a small fee. They often run free events which is a great way to meet people if you are on a tight budget.
One of the many societies at Oxford Brookes University is the Film Society, which was re-invigorated in September 2021 by a group of third year film students after the original society had ceased because of the pandemic. The short film that you will find on this page helps to highlight their experience of using skills from within their programme with the awareness of how their professional skills have developed.
For Film Society, the committee put on a screening every week on Tuesday evenings which would sometimes be followed by a drink at the pub. Due to the nature of film, this society was a very relaxed one which offered people a chance to do something calm and low pressure, while still getting them out of the house and in a room where they could meet new people.
Of course, as well as being a fun and sociable experience, societies can be great places to do things which you can later add to your CV, especially with subject based societies like Film. This is particularly true if you get involved in running a society. For example, three of the committee members in the year 2021-2022 used their involvement in running the society as part of their work experience for one of their third year modules. Working on a committee can be a great learning experience and will teach you skills that you wouldn’t necessarily acquire elsewhere in the curriculum – watch the short video to find out how!
Thank you to the 2021 – 2022 Film Society members for their time.
